A young, orphaned boy named Trad, along with his three-legged dog Jokey, discover a weak and injured man in the heather of the moorland.
Trad finds he can safely hide a golden ring within the intricate inlay of his precious lute, as three-legged Jokey observes. The exhausted, unidentified man and Trad arrive at the wise-woman's hut in the forest. Somewhat recovered under the care of the Wise Woman, the man entertains them all by playing the lute.

Trad, now disguised as a girl with dyed black hair, learns to swordfight while journeying to the great City. Trad and Jokey dance along with the juggler Marlo in the square of a town, as they continue their quest.
They finally gaze upon the great, walled City, built in tiers upon a mountain.
Trad and Huon must struggle through a water-filled trench to reach the City safely.

The traveling group find refuge in the local blacksmith shop Huon, having shaved his beard and colored his hair, looks to be the young Knight he actually is as he gazes upon the sword he will soon need. Trad's hair has been washed and returned to the original golden curls. Huon and Trad attempt to make their way to the city before daybreak.
